Juggling too many games: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D falls victim

I have a problem when it comes to video games: I juggle too many of them at the same time. To be clearer, I juggle too many role-playing games (RPGs) at the same time. This leads to me leaving games mid-story for months, eventually returning to them and realising I have no idea what is going on anymore.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D

A few years ago, I managed to save up enough money to upgrade my Nintendo 2DS to a fancy new Nintendo ‘New’ 2DS XL console. I specifically wanted the upgrade in order to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which I’d heard good things about. The ability to play a sprawling console-ported RPG while in bed hooked me. I got the game, played for a few hours and then left it for at least four months.

I’d only put in around four hours of gameplay, so starting over wasn’t a big deal. I restarted Xenoblade and put in a further 11 hours of playtime. And then – you guessed it – I put the game aside for an even longer chunk of time.

I’ve been at home sick the past few days. So, while I’m bedridden and not able to do much (besides writing this article, apparently), I decided to have another crack at the game. After 10 minutes of running around, I don’t know who the characters are, where I am, how to fight, or why in the hell every non-playable character (NPC) has a quest for me. Even the story log wasn’t much help. Combine that with my eyes being a bit glassy at the moment, which makes the game difficult to see.

And, now, I’ve cleared the save data once more in order to start fresh in the future. However, I’m not completely sure I’ll ever go back to Xenoblade Chronicles 3D as the opening hours are a slog. I really do want to play the game – I mean, I bought an entire console just for it!

A recurring problem

But Xenoblade isn’t my first victim when it comes to putting aside RPGs for months on end. Another is Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, which I highly enjoyed. But now, I don’t know what the hell is going on in the story. The same goes for Final Fantasy XIII, a game I’ve started over countless times in the past. Heck, I still have Dragon Quest VII and VIII save games sitting in limbo. I love all of these titles (not FFXIII), but I just have limited time and limited patience.

Maybe one day I’ll go back to all of them. Do you have this problem as well?
